Refresher RollThe intermediate students had the responsibility of completing the Refresher Roll project, given in order to refresh the students' memory of creative techniques that they learned in basic digital photography. The project included using "stop action", "blurred action, "large depth of field", and "shallow depth of field". "Stop action," occurs when the motion of the subject is suspended. A person may create a "stop action" effect through setting a fast shutter speed on their camera. In addition, "blurred" action includes a moving focus point of the image that has blur; this requires a slow shutter speed. "Shallow depth of field", another technique in the assignment, gives emphasis to the main subject. The camera can be set to have a large aperture opening, and this allows only parts of the image to be in focus. The Refresher Roll project also focused on a "large depth of field". In this type of image, everything: foreground, middle ground, and background, are all in focus, which requires a small aperture opening. In this assignment, Natalie used the rule of thirds in order to thoughtfully design the layout of her images to avoid creating snapshots. She enjoyed this assignment because it allowed her to take a variety of different image with the small amount of restrictions. Although Natalie found herself extremely happy with her images, she believes editing night time pictures had a few challenges because of their black backgrounds.
